When You Might Need a Crown
Not every damaged tooth requires a crown. Sometimes, a filling or another restorative treatment might be a better option. What is right for one patient isn’t always right for another, which is what we find out after a thorough assessment. Here are a few situations where we usually recommend a dental crown:

What the Process Actually Involves
Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual, and the entire process is usually completed over two appointments.
It always starts with a thorough consultation. We'll examine the tooth closely, ask about any pain or sensitivity you've noticed, and sometimes use 3D imaging to understand what's happening beneath the surface, before talking through whether a crown is genuinely the right option for you.
Once we've agreed on a crown, the tooth is gently reshaped to make room for it. We would also take a digital scan at this time. This allows us to design a crown that matches your bite and blends naturally with your surrounding teeth. You will wear a temporary crown while the permanent one is being made.
At your second appointment, we will check the custom crown for fit, comfort and appearance. If all is well, we will bond the crown in place. Final adjustments, if needed, are made to make sure that your bite feels natural and comfortable.
Throughout the process, you'll have the opportunity to ask questions and understand each step of your treatment. Our goal is to help you feel informed and confident, so you know what to expect from start to finish.
Materials & Aftercare
We generally use porcelain, ceramic or zirconia, depending on the tooth’s location and the forces it needs to withstand. Back teeth doing the heavy chewing work sometimes need a different material to a front tooth, where appearance matters more. We’ll talk you through the suitable options for your case, and allow you to decide the material you want to go ahead with.
After crown placement, we recommend that you care for it the same way that you care for your natural teeth. Good brushing and flossing, regular check-ups, and a little caution with very hard or sticky foods will help it do its job well for years to come. How long it lasts depends on your bite, your oral hygiene and your general dental health, so it’s not something we’d attach a fixed number to.
